Yes it is, I think they said we have more surveillance on us than any other country in the world - even a police chief came out this year or last to say there was too much spying on the populace. Its not even like the footage is always admissible in court so you can't say its just to help crime - its certainly not as if crime rates are falling as a result. I guess we're starting to feel the effects of not having a bill of rights like the americans. Of course, americans seem happy to burn their rights to ash as long as the government keeps them scared about terrorism. This world is really headed a bad way. I'm not sure what can be done about it.

No it isn't. It is however overly security focused, and there are a lot of cameras/surveillance operations in progress today, but this is no different than the security measures of the cold war!

For this society to become that of Orwell's depiction in 1984 you would need to start with a total and complete control of the entire populace. This will NEVER happen in Britain, and why....because of materialism and consumerism. Next time you see a CCTV camera or hear about new funding for a police surveillance operation, think where the money comes from to buy/fund it. It comes from the fact that we keep buying some of the most highly taxed goods on the planet in the UK. If they stop us doing that then........that will be a lot less cameras.....

If it were to happen a totalitarian society, in the west inparticular, would collapse within months, as in this day and age money is more important than ever before.

The 21st century is a century of surveillance, but the top postion will always be maintained by the consumer! and although the consumer will be watched more and more, it won't turn into an Orwellian nightmare!

This is a country with more surveillance cameras than any other, that is run by a tin pot/ crack pot corrupt government in my opinion, so I'd agree.
We have small remote control flying cameras on trial for policing, a new bill very soon where our telephone calls can be listened into, new legislation every day, and even ideas to turn us into vegetarians.
No kidding.
Add a few suspicious deaths (the guy found hanging from a tree - I forget his name now, but it was political), Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, the war against terror, Princess Diana etc, and it all seems unbelievable.
The uncontrollable flood of immigrants taking jobs that we otherwise could be doing, bugs in hospitals... I could go on.
But I won't.
I'm probably being bugged as I type.

The greatest chill in 1984 wasn't the watching of all party members by the state. No, it was the reduction of language to the point that the thought of rebellion was impossible because the words and symbols would no longer exist. Something you yourself are assisting with your feeble spelling and abominable grammar. I mean how hard is it to click on the spell check icon.

Oh Yes Big Brother is alive and well and not only in Great Britain. There are satellites in space able to monitor anyone on earth not to mention the computer. It is very difficult now if not impossible to have any privacy. Lets hope we never get to the stage of Thought Police!!!
