Many agents actually start off as actors, which is helpful because as an agent you need to understand the ins and out's of the industry. As an agent, you receive breakdowns from Casting Directors and it's your job to provide them with some of your signed actors that you think will fit the part. You have to be behind your actors %100, sometimes even having to convince a CD to allow a particular actor to audition that your confident about, so you only sign actors that you are positive have a chance at a successful career. You are their cheerleader. An agents reputation is on the line every time you send one of your actors out AND you only get paid when your actor gets paid. So, you also must have a good eye for talent, but also for what is marketable.

In DC, many agencies offer internships, so I would recommend calling agencies in your area to see if any of them offer anything similiar. Theatre's too - some of them may offer casting assistant positions. Basically do whatever you can to just get into the scene.

Also, it's not a bad idea to start reading everything you can about the business side of acting. There are a lot of books out there about agents, most of them are targeted to actors looking to find an agent, but may help you as well to better understand your role. Any information is good information!

Best of luck!

No special requirements, some Talent Agents train employees.

In some agencies, the "new agent, attends theater productions with a senior or Junior agent, to get a feel for the industry.

At some point, when you're seasoned, you will attend theater by yourself, and report back to the senior/junior agent.

A degree is NOT necessary. Many agents do not have a degree, nor do the Junior Agents.

Every agency operates differently. Don't base anything on how one agency operates it's business.

A commonplace question. you do no longer start up with the aid of hiring an agent; no expert agent will evaluate you until you carry club in a union (fairness, SAG, or AFTRA)--and you'll be able to't connect them until you have labored as a expert in a known production. the main commonplace thank you to alter into an actor is to end a BFA (bachelor of nice arts) software at a school. entering into that software may well be hard; they like people who've completed countless novice and college theatre, and who've countless academic ability. any incorrect way is to pay for as many professional-point workshops/instructions in performing, dance, voice, degree try against, or in spite of--and working your way into novice roles to construct up your resume--and finally finding and getting a destroy at a form of few union jobs that have open auditions.

Briefly, then, you should get employed by an agency in any capacity so you can learn the business. Many actors who are signed with an agency also work for the agency as talent reps or teachers or whatever. In most places, you will also need to be licensed, you will discover that by working for the agency. You must be charming, energetic and indefatigable.
