It squeals when I drive and gets louder when i go over bumps and when I steer in either direction. I thought it was my fan belt but I replaced it yesterday and it is still doing it today so that is ruled out. It sounds like it is coming from directly below me or from the back passenger side (i'm right hand drive). It stops this really loud noise when I break (so if I drive past a group of people I break slightly because I am getting so embarrased at people turning round to look at what is causing the noise - oh the shame) Its only an N reg Punto but I am now worried it might be something serious and dont fancy hurtling along the motorway every day to work if the engine is going to fall out. I dont know if its all in my mind now but I am sure my steering sometimes goes and I can feel a slight loss of power to the car. Do you think a wheel may be loose or my steering is faulty. It only got MOT'd 2 months ago. Should I just scrap it?..teehee

Just wanted to add, I have had all brake pads replaced 2 months ago and also some 'y' things to do with my steering or suspension (hey, i'm a girl..i'm not meant to know exactly what things are). Pretty impressed with the responses so far in such a short space of time.

The noise is almost certainly coming from the front brakes.
When you got the pads changed, did they change the discs too? What may be happening is that there's a 'lip' on the disc which is making contact with the new (thicker) pads as you drive, causing a horible noise, which when you actually brake goes away because the full face of the pad is being pressed onto the disc. You can either;
A, ignore it, it will go away eventually by wearing a groove in the new pads.
B, help it along a bit. On a safe, straight road, brake hard from 40-50mph a few times, this will also rub off any residual 'crud' on the discs, and is worth doing from time to time anyway if you don't normally drive hard.
C, get new discs fitted, not expensive on a Punto, maybe £100 tops at a garage.
If there is a slight binding on the brakes, that'll also explain the funny steering and apparent loss of power.
Finally, you can check yourself if the brakes are binding quite easily. Drive for a few minutes at low speed, then let the car coast to a stop without using the brakes at all if possible. Get out & lightly touch the metal centre of the front wheel ( take off a hubcap beforehand, if you've got one). BE CAREFUL, if it's very hot, then it's definitely the brake on that side which is binding.

Mate it sounds like you either need new brake pads or the breaks are rubbing on the drum bit that is suppose to turn round(you know that cover that goes over the breaks when ya change em)..
As for steering, try getting the tyres aligned (tyre tracking) £20 shud be about the cost for it

Hmm,
many an older car squeels badly if the belt is slipping on the water pump, but this sounds more like the anti-squeel springs on the front discs are knackered or come adrift.
Hence turning or braking way well make it dissapear for a while.
They are only cheap little clip-type springs, and easily replaced by yourself or a tyre centre.
Could be as simple as that !

W/ re: to the steering, it could be the u-joint or your steering column. This is more likely if your car has a lot of miles on it.

W/ re: to the brakes, how long has it been since you've replaced your brake pads? Your brakes could be sticking or the pads could have worn down & now you are wearing the drums. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/brake.htm

Could be that a stone has lodged itself between the brake disc and the cowl. You will probably be able to dislodge it with a screwdriver once you have taken the wheel off.

Check your "Power Steering" fluid. When it gets very low it will squeel when you turn the steering wheel. If it is low, check for leaks. Sometimes the hose leaks. If it does, change it immediately.

Since its a skyline, you're hearing his BOV (blow off valve) or the winding of his turbo. When turbo's wind up the make a whistling noise and the BOV's make a hiss when there is too much PSI and it releases it.

Must DO's:
1.Take 4 new OZ Alloy rims and new tubes.
2.Fix the brakes or buy new 1's.
3.Take ur car 2 a workshop or whatever and check that if ur steering is faulty if so get a new 1.
4.Tune ur engine
OPTIONAL:
Give ur car a new look by ading a
new body kit
a spoiler
a hood
some vinyls........
I HOPE THAT WAS USEFUL

I've had this problem lately and it turned out to be my brakes although it could be a wheel bearing.

its a wheel bearing or bottom ball joint.
it wears and allows the disk to "tip" so its rubbing against the caliper or suspension arm... dabbing the brakes stands the disk upright again, for a second or two...
