It may be a 'Heat Lightning'.Heat Lightning is seen in an isolated thunderstorm which is over 50 miles away. The thunderstorm usually forms on a hot summer and produces no rain. The thunder also can not be heard as it is far away.

Please don't call it heat lightning; there is no such thing. The reality of storms is you can see strong storms that may be over 200 miles away due the height of the clouds. Those clouds produce lightning, which you can see, but obviously you won't hear the thunder.

It means that there is a storm miles away but the thunder is either too soft to hear or too far away to hear. If the wind is blowing your way it will eventually arrive if it hasn't blown itself out before hand.

It's dry lighting. If you heard it within a few seconds, it's miles away. Remember lighting occurrences are due to fusion of ions above the cloud so it has nothing to do with the climate.
