People respond differently to pressure. I guess you're one of those that respond positively. Some people make more mistakes while some people get "charged up" and think more clearly. This is because your brain acts like it does when faced with competition. This time, you're competing against Time. You either start to worry too much and end up not focusing on the task at hand. Or you start to realize how much you have left to accomplish. Like when a surge of adrenaline can make you shaky and unfocused or boost your thinking process.
They also say that women tend to work better when faced with competition than when working alone. But curiously, women perform better when competing against other women, maybe in you case, you can say that you're competing against yourself as well? :)

When the deadline is near or the exams is on the next day, all you have to do is cram. However, when you feel too much pressure it won't be good for you and you will start to worry regarding the deadline/exam until it comes on the next day. With that, you can not think anymore therefore you can not study well and you're mind won't process because you are worried about the exam/deadline the next day.
I advise you to do things week/s or days before the deadline or exam so that you can think better and it will lead to positive results. Since if you will cram then stress will be present and when there is stress then you can't think better.

Nothing wtrong with you if it works. But it is also possible that you could change your study style, so you don't cram.
Fact is, cramming could lead to you burning yourself out, exhausted by the time of your exam date. It has been established that even though "crammers" passed they would have done better if they were not so tired. That it can be very difficult to cram a years worth of information into your brain within a few weeks.

Because your mind is doing what you want it to do, studying. Maybe if you studied several more days a week and did your homework regularly, there would be no need for the cram sessions. Quit putting pressure on your brain now that you knows it knows what it is supposed to do.

There's nothing wrong with you, sweetie. Some of us do thrive better under pressure. Whatever works well for you then that's what you do. So cram your way to the top. You're okay!!!
Bear in mind, however, that brownouts do happen when you least expect it. So try not to do your term papers at the very, very last minute. You don't want to be "power"less when you need to be "power"ful. Been there, done that!
Good luck with your studies...more power to you.

Some poeple come into high gear only if the pressure is high enough. As long as the deadline is far, they cannot concentrate on the topic, because it's not urgent. That's why.
It's not a bad thing, as long as you're good. But if you realize, that you cannot pass the tests, because you're not ready, then you have to force yourselve learning at earlier days.
So nothing is wrong with you.

It's the adrenalin.
Nothin' wrong, kiddo.
Just don't make it a habit. When organizing your schedules, just pretend characters from horror films are after ya'. That'll do the trick. Dodge an electric hacksaw here and there, Freddy's razor sharp finger claws now and then. You'll do just fine. Whew!

just to add, cramming stores knowledge in your short term memory. and last minute jobs could be much more better if you have given time to it
