Never ever use Windex to clean the screen on your laptop. The ammonia in Windex will damage the plastic coating after repeated use. Go to a place like Lenscrafter or PearleVision and buy a lens cleaning kit; it should come with an isopropyl alcohol spray and a micro-fibre cloth. Do not use rubbing alcohol as it typically has other ingredients along with isoproyl alcohol.
First things first, turn off the computer. This makes it easier to see smudges on the screen.
Second, wash your hands. The oil on your hands will get on the micro-fibre cloth and just add more smudges to your screen.
Third, with your clean fingers, GENTLY scrap off any hard particles that you see on your screen. The last thing you want to do when cleaning your screen is to put a scratch in it.
Fourth, spray the screen a fair distance away to cover as much of the screen as you can in one spray. Spraying too close to the screen will make it harder to clean and inevitably leave streaks.
Fifth, use gentle circular motions with the micro-fibre cloth to clean the screen. Keep using circular motions in each area until it's clean. The edges will be the most difficult to clean.
Lastly, know when to give up. You won't be able to get your screen looking brand new. The important thing is to focus on the center of the screen.

ahhhhhhh, for once a question that i can totally and confidently answer. The way i do it is very efficient i think. I do that with all of my non photographic optics. Get a lint free (big is good) piece of cloth. Spray some windex on it, and then get rid of all the grease. Once this is done, you need to get rid of the streaks caused by the windex solution. I simply get real close and i breathe on the screen to lay some moisture from my breath. I then wipe it off nicely. I actually purchased a hand humidifier for ironing since i clean so many optics, but for a one time thing you will be ok. Cheers and good luck.

Water and a micro fibercloth. Thats it. Nothing more nothing less.
Some monitors wont react well to chemical such as windex or alchohol so the best thing to do is look it up on your monitors website but you'll always be fine cleaning it with a little water and a micro fibercloth.
