I want to assume the chain is attached in some method NOT WELDED? Without knowing the method of attachment currently; or if the chain itself is welded link; answering will be difficult. While I understand completely the function of the chain on the door; I can't imagine it being strictly practical without some type of spring included in the mechanism. To have just a chain would eventually have strained both the substance of the door and the frame; at least at the points of attachment.

Actually as a Fired door; it should be code regulated; and likely have a pneumatic closer on it.
