I don't see any Os in Number and yet someone has deemed the official abbr. to be No. Why? Why?

It is abbreviated "No." because the word is derived from Latin word "numero".

Because the abbreviation was not derived from the English word "number", but from the latin-based "numero".

That is an AWESOME question. I wondered this once so I did some research and it's because it's abbreviated by the latin version of number which is "numero".

"No.": Latin 'numero', the ablative case of 'numerus'. So "No. 6" means 'six by number' or 'six in numerical order'.
