While the monks in Burma fight for democracy, the government here is planning to intercept our phone calls and listen in on our mobiles. This information will be supplied to loads of government bodies! Apparently this will help fight terrorism. RUBBISH. To all those who say 'if you have done nothing wrong then you have nothing to fear' are aiding this big brother culture. Why oh why is our privacy being attacked and stripped from us bit by bit??? I have a right to privacy, it's a liberty that is a god given right and i will not give it up for a snivelling nosey bunch of jobs worth sly filth while others die for their rights, we willingly give ours away....

Actually Zee, it will happen, it has already made the papers and will be passed through the proper channels very soon. Too much work?? I don't think so, some will go to extraordinary lenghts to find out every stupid little detail. By the way, I'm not American, I'm British.

DNA databases, CCTV, phone taps and powers of detention without charge, we must wonder how long before "thought crime" enters the statute books. Our society is inexorably limping towards a totalitarian state and not one M.P. seems bothered. Big Brother here we come!!!

Hello Heidi,
Although I do personally feel that if we have not or don't do anything wrong we have nothing to fear, I do believe that this country is stripping away our freedom and privacy in one way or another day by day.
None of us knows what is happening or how much each of us are being monitored already.
We have a right to our freedom and privacy unless or until we individually forego that right through our actions.
If this kind of constant monitoring comes into effect or if it already is, our human rights are being stripped completely bare.
We know we are being monitored when we use our Nectar card , Tesco card, bank/credit cards and goodness know how many others. How do we know our conversations on the phone are not already being monitored by some sleazy Government Department.
I personally have no objection to the idea of ID Cards as a lot of countries have used them for many years, but I do object to the fact that there will be chips in them which can monitor our every move.
Perhaps its time to take the Government to the Court of Human Rights.

Did they employ these tactics during the 70s & 80s when Britain was under attack from the IRA...?
Of course not. The weapon of choice for governments now is "fearmongering"
Anyone who stands up for their rights as a "free" citizen is immediately branded a security risk or activist (whatever that means)
How did George Orwell see 50 years ago, what we fail to see today...?

couldn't agree with you more on this one! Terrorism is just the governments excuse to errode our freedoms. They do it under the guise that it's for 'our protection'.
listening to the works of Bill Hicks should be made compulsory...
