Although such a thing is of common sense & no legal advice is required but since many views are coming here & even suggesting you to contact a lawyer for this pupose, so I reply. You are divorcee for all purpose. In all your documents you can use the word "divorced" only. As far "single" is concerned that only a person who never got married can use. The abbreviation Ms. is most common & it includes all single, married & divorced ladies so before your name you can use this abbreviation. There are many documents where specifically you are asked single/married/divorcee in such documents you have to tick the word "divorcee". In case you find only two words single & married are being used in any document, you can stick down both & write with your handwriting "divorced" or “divorcee”. Never misguide any authority by mentioning the word as "single" if you are "divorcee" that will give a wrong impression about your genuineness & your application can be rejected for this reason only. Let me tell you when any two people want to get married under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 before the Marriage officer they have to make declaration about their marital status where they have to mention “divorcee” if any of them is so & even attach a copy of Decree of such divorce, if this person mention “single” as marital status his or her declaration can make such notice to marriage as false & such notice will be rejected by the Marriage officer on this ground itself. Legally you can only use word "divorcee" or "divorced" & not "single".

The only "legal" way a woman can list herself as single is if she has never been legally married or legal documents state that she is no longer legally married/bound to someone else. IF she is not in either of those categories.. then she's legally married.

It depends in case to case. If the woman has got divorce decree approved by concerned court then she may to do so. However in marital alliance she should mention as divorcee and in office record or other matters she may mention herself as single.

When a person is divorced, they are no longer married, therefore they can refer to themselves as single or divorced. Saying you are single does not necessarily mean that you have never been married. it must means that you are not presently married.
