A rectangle has four sides. By the definition of a rectangle, two of the sides are of a different length than the other two sides. The sum of the lengths of the four sides is the perimeter of the rectangle. Mathematically, this may be represented in this fashion:
P = 2A + 2B, where P represents the perimeter and A and B represents the lengths of the two sets of sides, respectively.
If the length is 9 ft greater than the width, we know a relationship between A and B, expressed thusly:
A + 9 ft = B
If we substitute this into our original equation along with the specific, numeric values, we will have a value for one of the sides:
P = 2A + 2B
P = 2A + 2(A + 9 ft)
P = 2A + 2A + 18 ft
P = 4A + 18 ft
50 ft = 4A + 18 ft
4A = 32 ft
A = 8 ft
If we substitute this value into our second equation, we will have a value for our other side:
A + 9 ft = B
8 ft + 9 ft = B
B = 17 ft
We now have the dimensions of our rectangle:
8 ft by 17 ft

In this case we can assign the width to be some value x. Since the length is 9ft more than the width, the width is x+9. If we're looking at perimeter we add up all the sides so it's going to be two of the widths plus two of the lengths are equal to 50. So: x+x+(x+9)+(x+9) = 50, or 4x+18=50. Use simple algebra to solve for x and from there x will be equal to the width and x+9 will equal the length.

Here to help is on it.
just remember in algebra that the unknown quantity can be represented by any letter, and the SAME letter can be used for quantities that are the same.
you know you have 4 sides.
so we can just chose one of the sides and call it z or a or x or whatever.
and you know the other side is 9 ft longer
draw the rectangle and put the x's and the x + 9's in the right place, youll get the idea.
Dont just get the anwser, LEARN HOW TO GET IT. ok?

Perimeter is 2L + 2W
So 2L + 2W = 50
L = W+9
So 2W+18+2W = 50
so 4W = 32
so W=8
so L = 17
check 2*17 + 2*8 = 34+16 = 50.

L = W + 9
2 * (L + W) = 50
2 * (2W + 9) = 50
W = 8
L = 17
