You need to properly configure your laptop's wireless settings using its own wireless software. Also be sure to unclick the box "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" under Wireless Networks tab in Wireless Connection Properties.

assuming that you have your wireless card turned on in your laptop, you may have to manually add the new wireless connection. The laptop may be seeing it but unless it is one of your preferred networks it may not connect.

try searching for wireless networks on your laptop and make sure you have the wireless adapter turned on
