I have Mojo in a one gallon bowl - or rather I have two bowls, and he is put in a clean one every week. I have thought about putting gravel in it - so i could put a plant in it - but how would you keep it clean enough to have a healthy enviorment for him?

I dont have the capacity to have a tank now - its just not possible - but is it possible to give my buddy a plant for his enjoyment?

He'd love that.

Get one in those little pots. Remove for cleaning, and put it in which ever one he lives in at the time.

Better yet, get a plant for each. They help condition the water.

As for gravel, it just takes an extra rinse to keep it clean.

I used decorative rocks and found a super pretty candle holder that I used to cover the ugly black pot on the plant. It looks awesome, and he likes swimming around in the plant.

If you go with a plastic/silk/fake plant, make sure there are no sharp edges where he could scratch himself.

It is - as long as you have good enough light to keep the plant alive. There would also be the problem of cleaning the bowl without constantly disturbing the roots of the plant.

Since you have 1 gallon bowls, it might be better if you did keep a small tank. There are tanks linke this one: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3635102 that come in 1, 2.5, and 5 gallon sizes. It also has a hood so you can keep plants more easily, although I change out the light that comes with them for a 10 watt compact fluorescent by "Lights of America" that's also available at WalMart for about $5. The tank aslo allows the use of a small filter and a heater. I use the 2.5 and 5 gallon models for my bettas, and have two live plants, two silk plants, and a piece of driftwood for them. I also have a few Malaysian trumpet snails which clean around the plant roots (without eating the plants). The rest I clean by doing 25% water changes with a mini gravel vac once a week.

Actually, with the Bettas that I've had in the past the plant seems to keep it cleaner (dont know why or how)
But youll still have to clean it, maybe do a partial water change and use a turkey baster to syphen out the stuff on the bottom.

Hello freshbliss!
HRU?
Well I have my Betta "Mario" lol and I keep his lil tank clean every 2-3 wks and yes, he does have a lil plant there. He sleeps right behind it too! (very cute), I also have the crystal colored rocks for matching to his color (blue). I've had the fish for over a yr and a half. So far he looks happy. Hope to keep him longer and w/ his bright navy blue color.
Take Care...

i have my betta in my 50 gallon tank with some platties with no issues he just keeps to himself .it would not hurt to fill a small clean pail with fresh water and let sit for a couple days and use it to change the water with, where i live the chlorine level in the tap water is high letting it sit will let the chlorine dissipate.lot easier on the fish
