I will be doing some contract work at an Airport in Afghanistan for a 12 month term. I wanted to ask those who have done government contract work overseas what the living conditons would be like. In Afghanistan particularly...I already know of the harsh weather conditions...I just want to know if I will have my own room and privacy and what I would be able to do recreationally in that country. THANKS!

Bombs are expected to explode anytime and anywhere in Afghanistan. Thus, be careful in choosing places where to stay thereat.

Hi I'm looking into the same kind of work. What I have been told by a friend that was in Afghanistan was that contractors live in two types of structures. A large Army (like) tent that has or could be set up with plywood sectrions for privacy and the like. Or a small trailer both have air conditioning units but from what I have heard they are not so great. They have common shower areas as well as port-a-johns.
Doing some reading around it seems they are not the cleanest areas. Additionally the food service is "ok" at best. Again this my be just in AFG or at certian bases. I heard Iraq was a bit better but as well all know much more hazzardous.

Recreation?
Hmmmmmm, many things actually
-- learn how to save your self from stray bullets.
-- learning not to get killed in any other way like being blown off or worse getting killed by an irate Afgan worker.
--infact learn how to use an automatic weapon.

jokes apart
Get in touch with a local NGO and find out , when you reach there.Cos ,most of the NGOs are run by foreigners etc etc and they will be your best guide.

Perhaps these are some questions you should have thought of BEFORE taking the job.
