Bombay is called Mumbai and Madras is Chennai, then why is Burma still Burma and not Myanmar?
And, can sp,epne tell me the name of the capital? I've heard Rangoon (Yangon?), and Rangoon referred to as the financial capital and very annoyingly, as the former capital bit I have yet to hear or read the name of the present capital.

I still don't have the name of the new Maynmar (Burmese) capital. BBC world service don't know either. This morning they said that the UN Envoy was having talks in the 'new' capital.
No one, under the age of 70 calls Sri Lanka, Ceylon, Upper Volta is Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe isn't Rhodesia (possibly Southern Rhodesia, but I can't be bothered to check it out).

some people can't understand or speak it as the normal spelling. for ex: beijing, the chinese always spell b as p. so it sounds like peijing, but the western took it wrong as peking. i think it will be the same as the rangoon and yangoon (who knows, i can't speak it, sorry). thus the burma is related more to san suu kyi as the 1st answer said, and myanmar is the new name that its general suggested.
anyway, call them whatever u want to...people always understand both.

It's the military dictators of the country who have decided that Burma should be known as Myanmar. The pro-democracy activists, such as the famous Aung San Suu Kyi, don't agree.

Myanmar is not popular in the West.People stll call Burma.Becuase Myanmar is not a develped coutry and its share inworld trade is very less people do not know much about it.Now it has come in news because there is a thinking that China may annex or take over Myanmar shortly.

I prefer to use the name of Burma becuase I prefer to listen to Aung San Suu Kyi instead of General Than Shwe
