what i need to know is:
1) what is the strongest material i can use for string (that one snap or stretch)
2) should i use metal or wood for the limbs?
2a) if i use metal, what kind/shape
2b) if i use wood, whats the best kind to use?
3) can somebody post a link to a diagram of a trigger

Here is a link to a forum page where someone shows his home made crossbow, a rather easy to make one.
On this site are more crossbows, metal as well as wood, some new designs some traditional.

I would also contact the SCA (Society for Creative Anacronism) they are the Medival reenactors and they have lots of good ideas for stuff like that. They would probably have some links to Crossbow enthusiasts that can give you advice based on expierence.
