Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald singing Stormy Weather. They were fantastic. When they sang that song, you could feel soul searching sadness. Now that's great music. It's a shame they don't write stuff like that no more.

Faith Evans. She's is so talented and so underrated. She has been accused of being a swagger jacker of Mary J. . But not so, she's so different she can do jazz and gospel in the same song. I hear all of her influences in her music. It's beautiful, 2nd place newcomer, Amy Whinehouse for the same reasons.

Alicia Keys... she's so beautiful and talented, and all her songs relay events of her life.
Not sure if it classifies as R&B, but in my opinion, she's the best female singer of this day and age.
