I am an AMD fanatic. Between the two there are distinct differences. Aside from the screen, which is not so important, the memory of the first is better than the second, as well as the hard drive space. You did not give the specifics on the video card for the first, but you did on the second, both of which could be upgraded anyway.

To answer your question with the information you gave, I would chose the first one. I would have liked to know the price differences and the video card of the first unit, but I do not have that information.

I have an AMD 3500+ with 3GB of DDR2 Ram and have two hard drives. This is important to me because if Windows has to be reinstalled, I have a copy of all of my information on my D drive. Were that I would have more information, I would be able to assist you better. You are wise to choose the AMD processor, rather than Pentium. While I do not do this, AMD possessors can be over clocked, but Pentium processors cannot be without potential damage.

Without knowing price, I really don't think you can make a mistake with either of these units. I do however think that more RAM and a larger hard drive might suit you better.

#2 should be great once you upgrade RAM to 1Gb. Turion MK-36 X2 (Trinidad core) is one of AMD's latest dual core mobile processor. It will be more "future proof".
#1 is a bit outdated and I'm quite surprised that the top posts are choosing it.

#1 is better but it would just be a waste if your only going to be downloading music and doing assignments. Go for the cheaper of the two.
