Although most fossils are found in sedimentary rocks, certain igneous and metamorphic rocks CAN contain fossils.

Intrusive igneous rocks (i.e. those that form by the crystallisation of magma below the earth's surface) never contain fossils. This is because, the magama crystallises below the earths surface where it would be pretty much impossible for any living thing to get incorporated into the magma. The intense heat also means that any organic remains that did somehow end up in the magma would be destroyed.

However, volcanic rocks (extrusive igneous rocks) certainly can contain fossils. They are most common in volcanic ashes, particularly those deposited in water. Even lava flows can occasionally preserve casts of large animals, tree trunks etc., although the actual organic remains themselves have been destroyed by the heat.

Low grade metamorphic rocks derived from fossil bearing sedimentary/volcanic rocks usuallty still have the fossils preserved.

Fossils are not found in either Igneous or metamorphic rock for the simple reason that the transition from sedimentary rock to igneous or metamorphic is a very volatile process. The extreme heat and pressure completely destroys any fossil remains that lie within. I hope that this is what you are looking for, enjoy!

Mostly because the heat of the molten rock (magma if below the surface, lava if above) completely burns up the potential fossils (plants or animals).

SOMETIMES, though, molten rock or volcanic ash will form an impression of the animal or plant. While not really considered fossils (because they are only a 2,000 years old), the casts of people from the Pompeii eruption in AD 79 illustrate this process. There are also numerous tree casts formed in lava beds and ash flows. There is even a cast of a rhino in lava in Washington State.

Igneous rocks are created from cooled magma. Sedimentary rocks (which contain fossils) are the deposits of earth that layer over one another and contain the remains of the life that prospered in that environment over time. One type of rock is created on the inside of the earth while the other is created on the outside.

Fossils are found in sedimentary AND metamorphic rocks.
Metamorphic rocks are sedimentary rocks that have been chemically changed by heat, pressure or both. Slates and marble can contain fossils.
Igneous rocks never contain fossils as there are no organic substances inside volcanoes.

Igneous rocks are formed by volcanoes as magma, granite and obsidian.

The heat of a volcanic eruption will destroy living things
and only rarely preserves any evidence of them.
