japanese and european standards? try world standards.
it is due to our culture which was built around the car and historically low fuel prices and the way we have moved from a hub centric town, i.e. you have to drive just about everywhere to get anything unless you live right in the middle of a city.
and the lack of forsight by the people and our politicians also, plus many places where there is a transport system, it is usually considered taboo and for poor people only, that culture thing again.
size and popualtion has nothing to do with it, you can take mass transit from the UK and end up in thailand just fine, that covers a huge area, i been back and forth across the whole of europe a few times without so much a map, just a very efficent system they have.
in japan also, i stayed there for a few weeks and had zero problems figuring out the system there.

Mainly because we are and have been trying to go cheap. And being cheap usually causes us far more tragedy than we can imagine. Yet, we still get easily fool by all the whimsical propagation that led us to think things are OK but actually not. We were confused to believed that our high standards haven't really slacked but still all the greedies are the ones that has been pocketed all the ripped off profits that our pretentious on the beauracy papers that has loop holes in them being regulated by yet another money launderers that are sitting in capitol hill offices. Truth hurts, and it's little people like us that tends to get hurt and screwed over and still there is very little that we can do anything about it. Good enough, yes?

We are a huge country. Public transportation makes no sense for a country spread out as we are.

The distances are much greater. Our auto industry is huge in terms of both volume of production, employment, and political clout. We have many cities, spread out over a large country. Our industry and jobs keep moving and changing. We appreciate the freedom that our cars give us. Our income is higher, so we can afford cars, and owning a car has become a status symbol of an independent adult member of society.

First off it is because we had gas at a extremely lower price then the rest of the world. Second we never have invested in a public transportation system, thanks to the shortsightedness of our politicans and voters.
