Yes and there were those that thought the earth was flat. If you can give any credit to those far more in to it than me, the theories of parallel universes makes the cookie even more binding. Then one may ask..." which big bang?". Most of us agree that the universe (as we know it) is still expanding, in all directions.

The Universe is not a flat sheet. I know where you got that from though.
There was a simulation of gravity's effect on space/time which used a flat sheet of rubber to simulate space and when we put weights on it the rubber sheet was deformed, producing a cone downwards around the mass. When we rolled a small ball past the Mass it behaved in the same way as an object entering a gravity field.
This is not the way the Universe really is but it is a good SIMULATION about how gravity effects other masses and space/time itself.
