Mitosis is the usual manner in which cells divide. It requires the doubling of the chromosomes and then separating into two cells. The endpoint of meiosis, in contrast, is the halving of the number of chromosomes, and forms eggs or sperm.

The vast majority of cells undergo mitosis only. Meiosis only occurs in germ-line cells.
