The interplanar distances (d) of solid crystals are partially dependent on the packing, or configuration of unit-cells in the solid. A unit-cell is a 3-dimensional unit of atoms, which is stacked together with other similar unit-cells to form the body of solid crystals.Each cell has a certain number of atoms in it. However, the number of atoms in a cell depends on the location of the atoms in the unit-cell. For example, in a body centered cubic structure, there is one whole atom in the center, but each corner atom only contributes 1/8 of an atom to the cell:

atoms are to the elements as cells are to organisms. they are fundamental building blocks. well, the analogy is not perfect - cells and atoms have internal structure, but those sub-structures do not have the properties of the whole.
