lol means laugh out loud! meaning you are laughing.

& it softens down what you say so people dont get upset! lol hahah hehehe there are rude ones as well lmao =laughing my a** off etc & there are worse ones you can work out
cant think of the one rolling around the floor lmao but you will catch on some how

It can mean all of the above, but it's 99.9% used for laughing out loud.
Also, kitty has been playing a little bit too much WoW lol, For The Win isn't really used outside of warcraft, at least not that I've heard ;-)
