Well, I'm doing a Power Point presentation for my history class, and I'm currently working on a slide that compares city life to rural life. My history textbook says that only one out of twenty colonists lived in cicies and the others lived on farms. Was this mostly because cities were expensive to live in, or just because people chose to live on farms? Or some other reason I cannot think of? Thanks.

because they had to if they wanted to eat. It is that simple.

Until the OIL AGE, farming was a means to life and only a limited amount of people could buy surplus food and meats.

There was no oil based fertalizers, no tractors ect... So production of produce and meats was much more limited.

Part of the reason is because the Industrial Revolution wasn't exactly in full swing, and without the mass production of goods, there was no need for the mass specialization of skills that we see today in modern cities, so people worked on farms or in small villages where a few people had the skills to do the vast majority of the work needed by the village. As people's lives became mechanized, we got more free time to learn specialized skills. Specialization of labor is an absolute requirement for societies to grow into complex city systems.

That's where the food was. And most of the work in the society was in creating it. And, it didn't store very well or transport easily either.
More properly, it wasn't until efficiencies of scale and production on the farm were achieved that sufficient surplus was available to support a large non-agricultural group of people (cities).
It's not a very good history book if it doesn't discuss this. Tell your teacher I said so.

Back then it was most an agricultural society. More money could be made from things like cotton, lumber and indigo. The industrial revolution had yet to come here. I hope this helped you.

because it was an agrarian society. people living in towns and cities relied on farming community for their food. I don't think they had inner city allotments at the time.
