The Greeks had academies - though these were more like universities. Plato started his in 385 BC.

Well, I know that answers 1 & 2 are incorrect; Socrates had a school, as did Aristotle and Plato, but who the first was?

It started in Greece with Socrates, they were the first to teach others what they knew and called it philosophy. What we have today is a modern version and it includes all people instead of just the few wealthy the opportunity.
