A map is a representation of an area of the earth. (or possibly another planet, et.)

If you look at the corner of most maps, it tells you the scale. Like one inch on the map equals ten miles, or whatever.

I just opened my Rand McNally road atlas to the southern california page. on the top it says one inch represents approximately 25 miles. And theres this little ruler like drawing that shows how far 10 miles is and how far 20 miles is and how far 30 miles is. So the scale is 25 miles equals one inch. Or in general terms, the scale helps you understand what distance on the map (one inch) corresponds to what distance in the real world.

The dictionary defines "legend": The fourth definition is A title, key, etc. accompanying an illustration or map.
