Honestly, I think they were punished too much for losing to the #1 team in the nation. Yes, they almost lost to Ball St., but almost everyone else ACTUALLY lost yesterday. They should have moved up a little bit, to mid teens.
As far as the future, it's hard to say... I think they shoot themselves in the foot by hyping up a mediocre team (and player, like Keller) and then when they don't live up to an elite status, people punish them b/c they were supposed to be one of the best. Great teams take time to build up (especially after you don't make it to a bowl game after a million years). Recruits will obviously still want to go to Lincoln and Callahan might actually be able to turn the Huskers into a powerhouse eventually. But he needs to be patient, after all, the great history at Nebraska means he has big shoes to fill, and even though the fans might be upset with him, obviously the administration is giving him all the time in the world (HE ACTUALLY GOT AN EXTENSION THIS YEAR!!!!). I hope to come out there for a game next year (my friends are getting married in Omaha), and I will get to see the 3rd largest city in the state (Memorial stadium on game days). The fans are sticking with the team, the administration is showing patience (and maybe some ignorance) and the recruits will always be there. Now Callahan needs to do it right, rather than through a get-rich-quick scheme that has failed him since the Pros.

It may take a little while. Look at OU. They were a doormat in the 90`s. Now they are in contention most every year. And no Callahan is not the answer. I still don`t see how a coach whose Oakland team more or less quit on him became a coach at a Powerhouse College program like Nebraska.

I believe the answer is, Yes! As far as I know, Nebraska has always been known mainly for a strong defense and good ground game. Now they're trying to incorporate a passing attack, which to me is smart on the coaches part in today's college football landscape. Say after a couple of recruiting seasons you could build an offense like Texas Tech or Hawaii and still have a good "D" and a running game like Nebraska's been known for, you'd be very hard to beat. Wait a couple of years and see what happens...could be very exciting!

As a UNL alumni, I can only say GOD I HOPE SO. However, watching the game against Iowa State this weekend, I can also say we have a long way to go. I was in college during the late 80's and early 90's when TO and his boys rocked the house every weekend. Callahan is too predictable. The players are clumsy, and have a hard time thinking on their feet. But, being the eternal optimist, I can also say that the only way to go is up...and they're working on it.

It will be a long time before they have a run like Osborne had. Sure they will be good one day. The tradition is to strong for them to not return eventually.

Honestly...I don't know.
They looked like they were making progress, but the loss to USC showed how far they still have to go if they truly want to be one of the elite.

The Huskers will be back - maybe not any time soon, but they will return to the top tier again.
