the rectangle with the greatest are would be a square, with 60 meter sides

a) 2L + 2W = 240 meters
L = 120meters - W

b) a square (which is also defined as a rectangle) would yield the maximum area. Therefore 240m/4=60. The area of your fence would be 3600 sq meters.

I'm not sure which level math class this is, but I'm not 100% sure how to find the maximum using trigonometry. You might be able to plot the area curve and the slope of the lenght (I'm not totally sure about this) and then find the maximum where they intersect.

The 240 meters of fence is definitely the PERIMETER of the fence.
a )Lets make l = length, w = width.
A = lw
To make it in terms of L, we would do L = A/w

b.) I'm afraid I cannot help you on this. Not enough information. Sorry

a.) area=(L/4)^2 L in terms of total length i.e. 240
b) 60 by 60 by 60 by 60
the total length has to add up to 240
and area of a rectangle is L^2 and
it has to have 4 equal sides

first: find all of the factors of 240

1 240
2 120
3 80
4 60
5 48
6 40
8 30
10 24

to find the area of a certain space, you multiply LxW so, in this case, all of these factors could be the fenced area. just choose one.

so L + W = 120
W = 120 - L

A = L x W = L.(120 - L)

A is greatest when L = W = 60
