Oh, sorry, ... NOPE haven't had a tetnus in ye ars - nobody ever brought it up? I'm 28 now. Nail was short, didn't go in super far, but definetly broke skin layers. Nail wasn't totally nasty and rusted, but not new either.

:) I'm 35 weeks pregnant and a couple of weeks ago I stepped on a tack. My ding-dong dog had stolen a package of new finishing tacks out of the garage and spread them around our yard. Bad dog! I mentioned it to my Dr. at my normal appointment a few days later and sure enough she gave me a tetnus booster since we couldn't find in my records the last time I'd had one. I'd let your Dr. know about it at your next appointment since it's in a few days. Don't be surprised if you end up with a shot, but I wouldn't worry about it too much between now and then.

contact your doctor's office and see if you need to do anything earlier than that. was the nail rusty? thats when you have to worry most. i had a step break on me that was rotted out, when i was 6 and a half months and 3 nasty rusty nails dug in my leg and tore it up in two 3 inch gashes and one 4 inch gash the way it ripped and tore my leg they couldn't put stitches in it, or sew it up, my husband took me immediately to the emergency room and even pregnant they gave me a tetnus shot inside the wound. after they cleaned it. then they bandaged it and sent me home. it hadn't been 5 years since my last shot but they said with it being a rusty nail that i had to have it redone then because that incident used up the effectiveness of my prior shot.

Call doc's office and ask if you need to do anything right away, besides to wash the affected area with soap and water, and bring the nail with you to doc, and he/she will determine if you need a tetanus shot, or what action to take.

Depends on the nail, the depth of the wound, and your last tetanus booster. (You probably had one at 14, did you get one at 21?)

If you can walk on it, aren't running a fever, and it isn't incredibly painful or suppurating, morning should be OK.

i would definitely call the on-call number for your doctor's office and get their advice...even with the morning appointment. best to find out now, and you'll probably sleep better, too. take care and best wishes!

When did you have a tetanus shot last?
