I haven't seen any other fleas since it but my cat has lots of flea dirt on him (thats what I have heard it called..I think its flea poop). Whatever the case may be..is it possible the cat had one flea and that is case closed. Is this flea dirt something bad besides just being dirty. Whats the deal here? My cat is an inside cat so this flea must have just snuck in on a shoe or something. What do I do give him a bath (which should be tons of fun)?

No, do not give your cat a bath. He may never forgive you and you will likely get horribly scratched, plus the chemicals in flea shampoo are poisonous.
The flea dirt means that your cat does have fleas, and yes, it's flea poop or "flea excrement." Indoor cats can get fleas from people walking in the house with an unknown flea on their clothes.

All you have to do is go to Petco/Petsmart or any vet and buy some Advantage or Frontline. You just put the liquid on the back of your cat's neck and all fleas will be dead within 24 hours or less. They also won't come back for at least a month. The stuff is awesome!!! As for the flea dirt, that will go away from your cat grooming himself in a little bit.

No, don't give him a bath, that is not the way to deal with fleas - and yes, it would be tons of fun (!)

It is usually the flea dirt you see on a flea infested animal, rather than the actual live fleas. One flea would not have caused all that dirt to be on your animal, there will be many others, there always is. Yes, flea dirt is flea excrement, it's digested blood. Also remember that 95% of a flea population lives in the environment (your house) rather than on the animal.

You need to treat your cat. Inside cats are just as prone to fleas as outdoor ones - fleas don't just come in on shoes, they hop in through doors and windows, same as any bug. Aside from being unpleasant, fleas can transmit tapeworms as well as just being infuriating and uncomfortable for your cat. They can also give animals awful skin conditions, as well as biting YOU.

Go to a vets to get a proper flea treatment. Do not even bother with anything from a store. Collars, shampoos and powders are all ineffective. You need to pick up something like Frontline, Revolution or Advantage - these are liquids that come in small pipettes that are put on the back of the animal's neck. Make sure it gets on the SKIN of the animal not the fur - it will then spread throughout the whole skin of the animal and kill all fleas within 24 hours, and protect against fleas for up to a month.

Get a housespray from the vets while you're there - Indorex, Acclaim, Staykil or Skoosh or anything the vets have.

You could give him a bath, or if you would rather, you can get flea drops. (There is cat soap and cat flea drops in the pet section at Walmart).
