The speedometer cable works by spinning, as opposed to push/pull like most other cables on a bike. Because of this, there should be a square or octagon shaped end on each end of cable, fitting into a like shaped hole.
Make sure ends are not broken/rounded off.
Cable should be greased EXCEPT for last 4-6 inches that go into speedometer head (actual speedometer).
Make sure ends are fully engaged into holes, turning inner cable as needed to align.

several things will cause a speedometer to stop working..First thing to check is the cable. Disconnect it from the wheel and speedometer. Hold one end and turn the other end. If the end you are holding doesn't try to turn then the cable is broken. Reconnect the cable to the wheel and spin the wheel. If the cable turns then your trouble is in the speedometer and should be replaced.

the grease is normal. if the cable isn't broken, check the ends. if they are square, they are probably ok. if they seem rounded, then they might be stripped. when reassembling the cable, be sure the cable end is seated into the socket firmly, make sure the tip hasn't broken off in the socket. as stated earlier, spin the wheel. with the cable loose from the speedo. if cable turns, speedo is the problem. it it doesn't it's in the bottom unit. make sure ends are tight top and bottom. loose nut could be the problem.

The grease is there by design. Depending on what your are riding, a bicycle speedo works just fine up to around 50mph. and a lot cheaper than most motorbike units. It is probably not worth trying to fix the one that went down, less money to just get a replacement.
