It is an extremely idealistic thing and the chances of it working out are nill to zip.

You would think the only people who would think this would work are young idealistic men but I hear lots of people talking about this.

Can anyone show me how it would work?

Socialism, as envisioned by Marx, is a purely hypothetical state of being. Some states, like the Nordic countries, enshrine certain socialistic philosophies into their society with great success, others not so much.
People are too selfish and self-interested to work completely for the common good.
Believing in it is like believing in God. Don't need any proof, just faith.

RayN- just to correct you, Canada is doing great. Economy is strong and our national debt is going to be gone within 15 years.

This people don't know a think about the real ideologies of communism and socialism. We actually live in a combination of all three, our capitalism is mixed with social and Marxist elements. There is no absolute. Currently, countries with a trend to more intelligent socialism are actually doing business wise better them the USA (Northern Europe). Some countries with more communistic directions doing great, like China.

Because its the only way to stop the greedy corporations from continously screwing the poor. To say socialism doesn't work is false much of Europe is doing well in a socialist society. Those who want a free economy hates the poor and doesn't care for the safety of the people. Safety should be the top stance of the govt. People should have a right to live a long life and safety should be above everything.

Yes, communism and capitalism will never work as long as there are people around who think the should be greater, and treated better than everyone else, which help twist the system into a fascist system.
Nor will it ever work when capitalist countries fear it, and keep interfering with it, and helping bring about its downfall.

Communism never works. Anywhere. It allows for the elite to live in style and the people to live in fear. Eventually, it either changes or is overthrown.

Socialism is flawed, too. But some forms do function fairly well - if you look at European countries like Sweden and Denmark, it works for them, but that is a very limited socialism but with mature roots and a population that generally support its aims. It would never work in the USA. As a people, we are far too independent-minded and the spirit of self reliance is very strong.

Not a day goes by I don't ask myself that same question.

It works. It suckers people into believing in it with it's false promise of equality and then once it takes hold it enslaves them under a dictatorship. That's exactly what it is designed and intended to do. That is exactly what it says it will do on paper. You just have to read the fine print.

On a small scale (Village level), democratic socialism can and does work, but only when everyone involved is equally committed to the ideals and equality. What makes it not work on a big scale is that it almost always disintegrates into authoritarian dictatorship, with massive power held in the hands of an elite few.

Which sounds very familiar.

Well, I had a substitute teacher in English the other day and he proceeded to tell us that communism was a good thing and that America was great because Bush was communist. Then he proceeded to tell us that the Holocaust didn't exist. Then I took a nap. 0_o

I believe it primarily thrives in groups and peoples as a reactionary belief. They don't like America, or the West, or perhaps the wealthy of their own country, so they adopt the philosophy out of rejection of that which they don't like. It won't work, but they still hold on to the belief as it reinforces their prejudices...
