I am 17 and I have been saving money since I was 15. All-inall all have $1800 saved up. Afterhigh school I will take a year off to make more money. I am doing this because I plan to move to New York City after University. I know it seems far away but I have thought about it forever. My sister is moving with me and she has some money saved up too. How much further do I have to go? Also, how much is the average 2 bedroom apartment a month? Any tips for saving up money and more thouroughly planning my move?

$1800 will cover about 1 month rent in the cheaper places in NYC . ( that's a 1 bed , doubt you can afford the 2 bedroom )
NYC is a pricey town .
You will need 1st month , last month and probably a security deposit , so about $5000 for the apt move in .
The utilities will be additional then you will need grocery $$$$ and bus fare .

I strongly suggest you secure good jobs before you get there because jobs can sometimes take awhile to come through and what if it takes 3 months ?
How will you pay rent for 3 months without a job ?

Smart of you to plan ahead and ask questions .
I think you will work it out .

good luck

First of all, congradulations keep up the good work!!!! A two bedroom in manhattan is about $2,500 to $3,500 a month plus 1 month security, first and last moths rent.
Just keep doing what you are doing. Do well in school, you both can then get good jobs if not in Manhattan then in Brooklyn (very close to NYC) Queens or NJ. You will have enough money if you keep doing what your doing, you just need to get a decent job and you will be set.

It's good that you're planning and have goals at your age and it sounds like you have your mind made up about living in NYC, but let me play devil's advocate for a minute... what if you receive good job offers in other citys besides NYC, like San Francisco or Miami and aanywhere in between? Are going to turn them down just to live in NYC? What if you meet your future husband in college and he asks you to move back home with him in Iowa or Texas? --- I just wanted to throw those out there young lady to help you stay focused on your dreams, keep saving your money and perhaps maybe even research some developing fields that may help you secure a lucrative career in NYC once you hit the job market. Good Luck and always, always plan your future.
