An auxiliary character is a secondary character. They play a very important role in a story because of the way their lives rub up against the lives of the main characters and create subplots and backstories. Never skimp on your auxiliary characters. They deserve good, fleshed out lives just like your main characters. Make them interesting. Make people want to know more about them. Who knows? One of those auxiliary characters could turn out to be a protagonist in another book. Pax - C

Think of an auxiliary character as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasely. They are big support characters for the main character.
