I for other reason still drink coffee. (it eases the constipation) I asked the doctor because I too heard that we should avoid caffeine. He told me that the reason they want pregnant women to avoid it is because it can cause dehydration, not defects. he told me for every cup I drink to make sure I drink at least 2 cups of water. So every morning i drink a 12oz cappuccino and and get a liter of water and drink that as will on top of my regular water intake. Just make sure you stay extra hydrated to avoid the dehydration from the coffee. You will be okay!!!

I'm 12 weeks pregnant myself, and was a coffee connoisseur. From what I've read so far, the caffeine raises yours and the baby's heart rate. The problem is with the amniotic sac the fluid causes the caffeine to remain with the baby for a longer time then with the mother. When we no longer feel the effects of caffeine the baby is still 'drinking' it.

i just read in a magazine and is was a pregnancy magazine about myths during pregnancy and it said that it is ok to have one cup a day but if you drink more then that then there are risks of premature pregnancy and thing like that. i just found the magazine it's American baby this is what it says. and i quote

MYTH : you can't have caffeine
REALITY:you can safely have your daily cup of java without guilt. "some women are so nervous about caffeine they won't even eat chocolate, but in general I tell my patients that up to 300 mg of caffeine.... the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee... is safe," says Dr. ricciotti. You don't want to consume more that that: several studies link high caffeine consumption with an in creased risk of miscarriage, premature labor, and low birth weight. just keep in mind that one cup of coffee isn't the same thing as, say. a grande coffee from Starbucks, which packs 550 mg of caffeine in its 16 oz. an 8 oz cup of brewed coffee has about 150 mg of caffeine, an 8 oz cup of black tea averages 80 mg, a 12 oz serving of a caffeinated soft drink contains anywhere from 30 to 60 mgs, and a 12 oz cup of hot cocoa has about 6 mg.

now i copied that right out of the American baby fall/winter 2007 issue so it's probably still on there web site.

My doctor told me the same thing as Brooke. However, I avoided caffeine all together during my first trimester to help lower the risk of miscarriage. Now I drink about 12 oz. of Dr. Pepper a day. I drink 64 oz. of water though to help compensate. I am drinking water constantly. Oh, and now that I am 36 weeks pregnant, drinking tons of water does not help the swelling in my feet like I was told it would.

yes, there are studies. Too much caffene in early pregnancy can increase your risk of miscarrage, as well as cause heart problems in the developing fetus. But there is a safe level of cafffene. You can have 300 mg of caffene, about 2 cups of regular, every day. Maybe try cutting down to half decaf.

Well if you don't have coffe you feel like poo, Right? imagine how you baby will feel like when he/she is born and has withdraw from the caffine. It would be best to slowly decrese your intake to where you don't need it anymore.

I was addicted to caffine also, so I started to water down my Cappi's I realized that I was just so used to carring my drink with me.

As far as defects all I know of is that it can increase the heart rate and can incread irriatability (sp?)

I was brethine for 3 months and it has similar effects as caffine. My daughter was easily startled and didn't sleep well.

You can drink a couple cups a day... but no more. Large amounts of caffeine can cause a miscarriage.

I avoided caffeine in my first and second trimester, but up until the last three weeks I've been drinking Pepsi bc my doc said it was ok.

Moderate use is fine, as long as your doctor hasn't told you otherwise for specific health reasons that apply to your medical history...
