I know that poor soil can be amended with the right nutrients. Good soil has lots and lots of organic matter. It also has lots of microbes eating the matter. If you have worms in your soil it means there is something good in the soil to keep the worms there. The worms will leave you a present. Fertilizer! Worm fertilizer is the best you can get and your plants will thrive.

Different soils are poor for different plants...a cactus thrives in sandy soil, but that would be a poor soil for a hosta plant. You can make a soil more nutrient rich by amending it with compost and peat. If the soil is clay you will need to aerate it and amend it with peat and add earthworms. Poor soil is in the eye of the plant:)

Well, poor soil usually indicates a lack of specific nutrients essential in the growth of plants. Some poor soil contains loads of clay which makes drainage a problem and can lead to root rot. Some soil is too loamy which means there is too much sand or porous material and causes plants to become too dry. Some soils can have pH problems that will effect the growth of a plant. One way to insure that you have good soil is to have a little of both clay and loam as well as other elements that will lead to an overall healthy soil. I began with clay soil myself and amended it with sand, grass clippings, leaf litter, compost, composted manure, and peat. After only one season, my soil was much improved and just gets better every year because I continue to amend my soil every season. Anyhow, I hope this answers your question.
Good Luck

Poor soil often contains small stones and few plants will grow using it. I know that using some additives, the condition may be changed. Go to a garden shop and ask what may be used.

Soil needs Iron and calcium. Plants love earth worms for oxygenation. It need to be moist but able to drain. If your soil is bad then start at your home improvemnt store and ask them about the soil in your area and they can tell you about the ingredients that you need to add to your area. Everywhere is different. so ask a area prfessional.

I know that claylike ground makes for poor soil. I know that if it's too hard to shovel it's too hard to grow any good amount of vegetation. I'm sure that if it's good soil, you'll find worms in it and then you know you did GREAT!

Can come from over farming a place of land, not using crop rotation, or it could just be infertile to start with.

Fertilizer can always help, but its expensive.
