I had the same problem - garlic smell - and I tried using coffee grounds left in there overnight. That worked. I also found this on a site because I was interested in what else works.

"I wiped down the microwave with the nail polish remover 5 times and with Simple Green 2 times. They helped with the cavity of the micro, but not the air ventilation system - where the burnt smell stays. I tried the coffee grounds idea and did it twice for thoroughness. I have no more smell. The coffee method did leave a coating of coffee inside the cavity, but I just Windexed and wiped, and now I'm good as new."

Clean the oven with soap and water, then dissolve baking soda in water and spray the interior. It's possible that you have burned the motor or rather it is in the process of burning every time you turn it on. If that is the case, the fumes are hardly doing your family any good and you should probably throw the oven away. You can get a really nice replacement at Wal Mart, or K Mart at a reasonable price. Remember the burning fumes of electronic appliances is worse than second hand smoke.

Clean it really well with a fruity scented cleaner like dishsoap. Get the base smell out and then make say ... popcorn or something yummy smelling to cancel it out. Wash every partk the tray, turning wheels, all of the walls inside and the door all the way to the hinges.

-Baking soda could work too, we used dawn dish soap and scrubbed at it.

First of all leave the door on the microwave open and do not shut it. Leave it air our. Then clean it out with backing soda and water. This should take the smell out. Good luck!

1] clean with soap and water, or windex. Then cook water with lemon in it.
2] if not cleared yet - put a small dish of baking soda, or coffee grounds in it overnight.
NO oven cleaner in anything but ovens! It will ruin the finish
[ and any food you cook forevermore ].
