Specific titles you might find interesting at Project Gutenberg.....
The Unwilling Vestal by Edwin White is about a 10 year old Roman girl who becomes a vestal virgin (a priestess) because her duty required it. She didn't want to do it.
Two Years in the Forbidden City by Princess Der Ling is the first hand account of a Chinese girl educated in France who became a lady in waiting to the last Dowager Empress. A good look at what it was really like in the Chinese court.
The Guns of Bull Run by Joseph Altsheler. This is the first book in an incredible series on the Civil War and two cousins who fought on opposite sides. Very good. I loved them when I was in 8th grade.
