I have a 46 gallon tank with an external filter, heater set at 80 to 81 degrees, and the proper chemicals added to make the water conditions good. Right now I have a couple bala sharks, and a couple sivler dollars. I was thinking about adding a Discus to my tank. I had a few questions about this before I do so. How many discus should I get? Wil they go good with the bala sharks and silver dollars? Will the water conditions be okay for all of the fish? Right now the ammonia is at 0, hardiness is soft, pH leve is about 6.2, and the nirites and nitrates are all good at . Is this good for the discus? What should I do, Please help?!?

Yes those water conditions are perfect!! But Iwill say this, a Discus is a very fragile fish, I personally wouldn't keep any breed of fish with them except neon tetras, cardinal tetras, or rummy nose tetras. Silver dollars are a bit nippy, and as far as bala sharks go they are okay, but their P.H. should be a little higher, preferably at 7.0, same on the silver dollars. Discus are a hobbyist fish, so you should be very careful about what you put in with them. I would hate to see a 60.00 or 80.00 dollar fish die because of nip wounds. Also if any of your other fish decide to die because of P.H. issues it would cause a ammonia and nitrite spike which would be devastating to a discus. So pick and choose carefully, research everything before you do it. Oh and dicus get to the size of a saucer 8 to 9 inches in diameter, and 4 to 5 discus will do well in a 46 gallon tank.Good luck!!

Slow moving, peaceful and shy fish. Discus are one of the most beautiful tropical fish and should be given a tank designed for their special needs. They should not be put in a traditional community tank. Discus do best when in groups of other discus. While most people keep discus by themselves, here are a few fish that I have seen in discus tanks: Clown loaches, farlowella catfish, small schooling tetras such as Neons, Cardinals, and Rummynose.

Keep the water sparkling clean and provide plenty of filtration. I recommend the use of activated carbon in your filter. Keep temperature 85-88 degrees. Maintain a pH of 6.6-7.0. Adult discus should have at least a 55 gallon tank. Use of special water conditioners such as peat moss or water softeners are not required. Do partial water changes (25%) weekly, or every two weeks. Some hobbyist use bottled water, or De-Ionized water with their discus.

The water is OK,the other fish aren't good companions for Discus(they're really not suited to community tank life). Discus at full growth can be 7 to 9 inches in diameter.
