I don't know about serious charges, but I know cops get awaay with lots of traffic violations. Speeding, failing to signal, failure to obey traffic signs, etc. If they get pulled over, they just flash their badge and off they go.

The police department has an 'Internal Affairs' section that investigates cases where Police are suspects. In many cases, the punishment for Police is MORE than for civilians. As the first answer stated, minor violations such as speeding are often not pursued. The vast majority of those are not pursued against civilians either. If even 5% of actual speeders were ticketed, the average speed on the interstate would drop 10 MPH overnight.
