My dad is a flame spitting Republican. I do care about him but if I really let the truth out he would probably call hellfire down on me for my views. There are a few others in my family like him. They rant to all the kids and grandchildren about how bad things are and how liberals are ruining the country etc etc. Talking to them you might think the soviet union still exists and there were tanks sitting in Berlin.

In my family I can safely say that most of the younger generations have become disenchanted with the older folks who seem to be lost in some sort of time warp. Some hippies never let the sixties and the same is true for their polar opposites.

My question is in your family how many people are considered one of those 'evil liberals'? Who is spitting fire duck taping their windows for chemical imminent attacks while Rush Limbaugh thunders and Fox news flashes its colorful fear factors to the nation?

Ha! It's pretty much the same for me. Everyone in my immediate family are Fox News watching conservative Republicans. Not quite of the flame-breathing variety, but they pretty much get all their news from Right-wing sources and are limited to GOP talking point views.

The rest of my mom's side are almost all super-conservative Republicans. My one uncle and I have gotten into arguments at family gatherings. He's so far Right it's ridiculous. They all live in the same GOP thought bubble I was raised in. The only support I have is one cousin who's more to the Left like me.

My dad's side is mixed in opinion. Mostly apolitical. But I don't see them as much.

Not that many liberals are traitors. Most are simply ill-informed, undereducated, or just incapable of critical thinking.

Now the right wing, on the other hand, is closer to creating some traitors. Zealots willing to lie to the country to push us into military actions or subvert justice...they need to be seen for what they are.

Families can be made up of people with all kinds of views. The only thing necessary to make peace possible is a little respect. If we respect the ideas of all, and if we can engage in healthy, spirited debate and then leave it behind, all will be well.

Why don't you talk to your Dad about this and tell him you'd like to be able to express your ideas freely (AND listen to his as well). But, beware, you're going to have to do your homework, so you can back up what you say - and that will be good for both of you.

Good luck!

My parents used to be die-hard Republicans and Bush basically pushed them over the edge. They're kind of in between Republican and Democratic.
When I was younger I was afraid to say that I disagreed with their views. (I knew they wouldn't have been mad or yelled at me, but little kids don't like to disagree with their parents - right?) Haha anyway, I'm Democratic or Liberal or however you want to say it and I can't stand being around conservative-republican people leaning so far right they have back-aches. I'm not really really far left, but definitely left and I can tell my parents don't like it. And I don't think they like that I'm rooting for Hillary. lol
Is it possible to be a Liberal Catholic? I was kind of wondering because I'm Catholic but liberal. Is that confusing or biased? lol

Remember "to thy own self be true"....

I don't consider Liberals to be EVIL just sadly, they are ill-informed.
Some Liberals are well intentioned while others are power mad... that happens on both sides of the aisle!

Must be a hell of a WILD Thanksgiving at your folks' place.

None. We all tend to agree, but to different degrees. My one brother, for example, is an extreme conservative and none of us agree with some of the stances he takes. He is currently dating and, keep your fingers crossed, may marry a semi-vegetarian liberal who was born and raised in Canada. She's rather liberal yet we all think she's great--including her extreme conservative boyfriend! Most of my friends are liberal, though. They're not all bad, just most of them. LOL

My family is very conservative, so I know what you're talking about. My dad was raised in a very conservative family, joined the military, and is now part of the NRA and VFW. According to him, if you're not as conservative as him, you're an "evil liberal."

Because of that, there's no liberals in my family. I do not agree with all of his political views, but I do not consider myself an "evil liberal."

Tell your father GWB is a traitor!
He ignored national security and terrorism which is why 9/11 happened!Ask why was the 20th hijacker Moussaoui in FBI custody for weeks before 9/11!And why FBI HQ denied FISA requests for warrants from Minneapolis where Moussaoui was arrested!
