Does anyone think that the whole american involvement in Iraq might be more about what we've not been told? The WMD in Iraq and 9/11 were the key in the ignition (so to speak) Liberation of a repressed people was given as a reason to stay, Stabilization was given as a reason to stay longer... but perhaps there are more reasons to stick around. Like having a base of operations to kept Iran in check. Also if you look at the geography of the middle east, and where most threats are comming from, Iraq and afganistan are statigic places from where to control the region. Perhaps there is more going on than what is just on the surface. Like when the US and USSR were at odds. we started to strategically place bases in Eurpoe and Asia to place pressure on The USSR.
My second question is, what will be said when Iraq is a stable, democratic society (i realize if this happens) well the left find other reasons to dislike the outcome? Can a leftist give me an idea what will be said if this happens

I agree with you that having another free, independent and democratic ally in this volatile area is certainly a factor in the continuation of this war and the objective of victory vs. the democratic policy of defeat.
If this objective is met, the democrats will spin it so effectively that their base will be proud that the democrats fought so hard for the victory in Iraq.
Back to reality, I can't imagine what the backlash against the democrats would be - although I am sure it would be forth coming from the republicans because the democrats all seem to be singing from the same hymn book, anti-war advocates irregardless of the provocation or possible consequences.
Jimmy Carter would be proud.

I call myself a democrat, not a leftist. The war in Iraq was unnecessary. Also, we are paying for the war with treasury bonds purchased by China. We haven't paid anything for the war yet. It will take many years for Iraq to stabilize. How will we pay for this? You'll blame the democrats for the high taxes one of these days not even being aware that it will be to pay for our war debts.
I'm sure many people would be less gung ho about this if we were doing the normal thing and paying for the war as we go. The Bush administration is doing this intentionally to prevent people from becoming weary of it. If any of them had any sense of responsibility, they would raise taxes now. You must be aware this isn't free.
I don't know that creating one war to start another is very intelligent. Jordan is close enough to Iran to carry out the plan that they have in store for them. Aircraft carriers could have been used.

I've always felt and said many times that the location of Iraq was a big reason for the war. Look at any map of the area. Not that that's a bad thing.
I'm not a democrat but I'm not sure they will be happy with any outcome. They have announced that a win in Iraq, would be bad for their party.

What did Saddam gas the Kurds with?
"dual purpose farm" chemicals that were sold to him by the Reagan admin dispite trade sanctions, along with the microbes Saddam was trying to weaponize prior to the first desert storm.
We all know he had them prior to Desert Storm 1, because the Reagan admin sold them to him. The conflict with reality comes in when claiming that he had them afterwards.
This whole war is to cover up what the Reagan admin did, and to prevent a catastrophic discovery of the war crimes they were involved with.
What do you think the entire world community would think if verifiable evidence was found....say by Iran who was going to take Saddam out if we didn't, that Saddam gassed his own people and Iranians with gifts from the Reagan admin.
Stuff is already starting to hit the fan as weapons courtesy of the Reagan admin is turning up in the hands of militants that are killing coalition troops.
What happens in the real world when someone is caught playing both sides of the line, and keeping two sides fighting each other?
Reagan's dog Saddam got off his leash and mauled someone(Kuwait), and he had to be put down before someone else did it. end of story.
Just goes to show, when your are doing things for "The Common Good" sometimes decency and respect for human life take a backseat.

For the second question, what happens if it never becomes a democracy...will the right blame the left again?
for the first question...its just for oil and arms contracts, you can't invade Iran because Russia and china won't let that happen unless you want World War going on and then the fight would be on American soil.

1. If that is the case why don't those in power level with people and explain it to them, instead of #$%^& lying to them all the time?
2. You obviously have your own caricature of what "leftists" believe. If what you are describing happens has it occured to you that your so-called leftists are human and would be just as happy as you to see tranquility and democracy in the region?
The difference is in the price you "rightists" are apparently willing to pay to achieve that, or, more likely, not achieve it. Not everyone is willing to see thousands of soldiers and cilivilians killed for your little pipe dream.

Finally someone who understands what this war is about. It is all about Iran. Iran has been trying develop nuclear bombs for the past 20 years. Iran is much bigger than Iraq and has a much larger population. US decided to attack Iraq to create a strategic base and perhaps to scare Iranians from pursuing their nuclear ambitions. Unfortunately, things in Iraq didn't quite go as planned.

Well, we are building a $600 million base there. We are staying there for a while.
We need to stay because we need to take out the dictators that want to kill us.
