In my experience people acting like you described have other problems. It does not matter what those problems are, they just create a severe lack of reasoning.

There is nothing wrong with avoiding problems. There is also nothing wrong with knowing the right way to duck.

The only way to zing a clown is to give them enough rope to embarrass themselves. Don't do it for him. Take the high ground. Don't create problems and keep your calm.
It still might not hurt to learn some self defense, not offense.

Kids are immature. I'm just glad I'm not in high school anymore no offense. I think though that you could try and I think if he lays a hand on you, go tell on the campus police. I think I remember I had one in my school. Point him out and say that he's the trouble maker wanting to start a fight, and also tell on him with the principal or the person in charge of disciplining kids. I think though, that you'd be glad you did because he'll get suspended for three days or something and it will be on his permanent record that he's a trouble maker.

Ignore him. Sounds like you have a more realistic set of priorities than he does -- stick with them.
