The main disadvantage is its not your class and the kids know that. You don't know the kids and you have a very short amount of time to go over the material you are going to teach. Also like was stated before there is no insurance and you are paid daily.

The advantages are you can choose when you want to work alot of school districts have automated systems now so you can hear about the job before accepting or declining. You can also choose if you want to work a full day or a half day and want age group you want to teach. If you decide you don't like fifth grade you just don't accept jobs for that grade. Also since you do have the option of choosing you can decide which grades are best for you, which teachers leave the best lesson plans, what subjects you are most comfortable teaching, etc.

I enjoy subbing and I don't think subs suffer. Most teachers leave detailed instructions and as long as you have some classroom management skills I think you are fine. Let the kids know in advance what your expectations are and they are usually pretty good.

In my state, Oregon subs get no health insurance, no paid vacation, just like labor, they get paid by the day. Subbing is often very difficult, you really have to have the right personality to do it, it can be extremely stressful, How did you treat subs in middle school or any level ?? It really depends on your given situation. If it is your only income and you need money ??? depends on your situation but many subs suffer,
