the green dot on the back of the helmet means that there is a headset inside so that the coach can communicate with the QB...only one player with the green dot can be on the field...it is illegal if two people on the same team with the green dot on the helmet are on the field together...

So the refs know who has the communication equipment in their helmet. You are only allowed one player to have it.
