Yesterday I got a turtle. I was told that it was a north american box turtle. I got it from my mom's friend who had bought the turtle for her son's birthday awhile ago. My mom's friend got it from a pet store. At first when she got the turtle it ate just fine now it has stopped eating. She wanted me to take it to see if I could get it to eat, but I don't know too much about turtles. Is there any reason why this turtle is not eating?

I own boxies and they are mainly protein eaters; worms and crickets but like fruit and bread as treats. Most likely giving the guy to you will prolong his eating because they take awhile to adjust to new homes. Also he may be gearing up for winter, even inside my turtles don't do much or have much interest in food.

Take a good look at him too, does his eyes look clear? Make sure he isn't blowing bubbles out of his nose and he reacts well when you pick him up. If he seems listless when you pick him up or has cloudy eyes or blows bubbles from his nose he may be sick, turtles can contract respiratory infections and he will need a herp vet for meds. Best of luck!

They need a large enclosure, a heat lamp (at correct temps to digest food) and UVB reptile lighting (within 12 inches of basking area and change the bulb every 6 months) in order to thrive. They need a variety of food items, vitamins, and a shallow pool to soak in and drink from. Here is a link to a wonderful box turtle care site--please check it out!

Get the right food, they are mostly herbivorous and will eat crickets, they tend to eat lettus they like those silkworms from the pet store, that's what ours would eat, and then again they do hibernate in some climates and it is the season.
