It's based on a couple of books published in 1865 and 1872 written by Charles Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. The Disney movie came out in 1951. Acid was an obscure clinical curiosity in 1951 and unknown in the 19th century, though I have seen speculation that Dodgson may have used hashish or opium.

The movie, like the first book, is a dream sequence. Some of it satirizes the history Alice was supposed to be studying and other school subjects of the era, and some of it is just silliness. Supposedly Dodgson, who seems to have been inordinately fond of children, created these stories to amuse a young girl he was acquainted with.

Alice in Wonderland is about a little girl that falls asleep and dreams she falls down a rabbit hole and meets all kinds of talking animals, talking playing cards, and mad strange little men. It has been speculated that the author Lewis Carroll was an avid drug user and Alice in Wonderland was one of his hallucinations while under the influence.
