To correct the answerer above me...

Jefferson was not the founder of the Democratic Party. Jefferson was the founder of the Republican - Democratic party now historically known as the Jeffersonians. Neither parties of today existed at the time of Jefferson and Adams.

The Comparison between John Adams and GWB is an accurate one. Adams was an elitist and was not fond of suffrage for all. But Adams was an intellectual perhaps too much so for anyone's liking at the time. Jefferson was a philosopher ahead of his time. Soft spoken yet politically brilliant. Jefferson embodied the Declaration of Independence and at times even noted that slavery needed to be addressed and abolished but never made a case for it due to the fact that it would have been political suicide.

But Jefferson while on the outside looks pristine compared to Adams, was not the best of presidents. He refused to deal with the British and Napoleon properly opening the gates for the war of 1812, he increased the size of government which he warned against, and broke his constitutional powers by making the LA purchase. Jefferson essentially became what he detested the most, while Adams was just a prick. Both died on the same day.

I think Adams did the Alien and Sedition Laws that basically made the Constitution's Bill of Rights inactive. Nobody tried that again until the pesent Mr. Bush. Jefferson liked democracy, he liked individual rights, he liked the Bill of Rights, he liked public education. Adams was sort of a throw back to English royalty in terms of priviledge for the elite upper classes, they were to get all the rights and everybody else got nothing, which was a philosophy Jefferson opposed. Jefferson also did the Louisiana Purchase, doubling the size of the US, and his proudest accomplishment was founding the University of Virginia. He was also the founder of the Democratic Party.
