Nashville is way cleaner and safer...I've met people from Memphis who told me to never go there...

OMG, if you have a choice, you MUST choose Nashville! It's so much cleaner, has less crime and is just a beautiful, wonderful city- but a city with a "small-town" feeling. It's fabulous! I moved here- actually to a smaller town a little north of Nashville, but I commute everyday- 6 1/2 years ago with my 3 daughters, a son-in-law and 3 grandkids and we all love it here! There is so much to do- most of it free- like museums, parks, hiking, lakes and beaches, farmers market, music, etc. The housing is still fairly reasonable, schools- especially those outside of Metro Nashville- are great (you might want to research the areas just beyond Nashville if you have kids), the poeple are great, loads of great restaurants and good shopping areas.... I could go on and on. Pick Nashville, you won't be sorry, I promise! Oh, I just re-read your details- you do have a family! Check out the town of Hendersonville- it's fabulous and growing and has great schools and tons of other amenities- that's where we just bought a house after living for a few years in Gallatin which is also nice but further from Nashville. Nashville is more expensive...otherwise, your best bet would have to be Memphis...but even Memphis has some Ghetto land to offer...how much of a home were you planning on buying.
